Frequently aksed questions

Här är de vanligaste frågorna vi får om jobbet på yachterna utomlands. Känner du att det ändå finns frågetecken, kontakta oss here!

As a stewardess, you are involved and make sure that the inside "the interior" of the yacht is in top condition. This involves detailed cleaning of both guest and crew areas. You make guests' beds, make sure their cabins are clean and tidy, wash and iron their clothes. It is also your task to serve the guests meals, drinks, snacks, etc. Tasks can also be to make nice table settings before meals and decorate the yacht for various events on board and serve at these. This is just to name a few tasks you may encounter as a yacht stewardess. Depending on the size of the yacht, you will be a team with a few other stewardesses. There are also variations on positions such as stew / masseur (if you are a qualified masseur) or stew / nanny (if you have experience of working with childrens), service stewardess, housekeeping stewardess etc. There are many different variants depending on what you are looking for and what the boat is looking for!

As a deckhand, you are involved and make sure that the outside "the exterior" is in the same top condition as the interior. This means that everything is polished and the teak is scrubbed. You are also involved in guest activities, driving tenders and assisting with water toys. As a deckhand, it is important to feel comfortable driving one of the yacht's smaller tenders! You will find out more about this in the course.

If you are a chef, you can apply for a job as a chef onboard. Depending on your skills, you can be the head chef for the guests, or the chef who cooks for the crew and assists the "head chef". On board some yachts, you do both parts. As a chef, you are also responsible for provisions.

An entry salary on board a superyacht is about 2500-3000 euros. The salary also goes up quickly after you have gained some experience.

On board charter yachts (yachts that are rented out to other guests), you can also get generous sums of tips, up to 3000 euro or even more for 1-2 weeks of charter on board. This is added to your monthly salary.

It is common for yachts to travel in "seasons". During the summer, there are many yachts around the Mediterranean, where popular destinations are Spain, the French Riviera, Italy, Malta, Greece, Montenegro and Croatia.

During the winter many yachts will cross over the atlantic, to spend time in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida.

Wherer there is sun an beaches, there will also be yachts! You will also find them in Asia, Australia, South Pacific and so on. As a crew member you will travel with the yacht to all these places!

One of the biggest perks of working in the yachting industry is that there are so many different variations of contracts. The most common are permanent positions or seasonal jobs. When you work permanently, you simply work until you resign. When you are a seasonal employee, you work for 3-5 months onboard.

You can also work shorter periods, for example a temporary contract for one month where you jump in when the yacht needs a few extra hands, or a few days here and there. There are many possibilities and you can decide a lot yourself.

As a greenie, it can be difficult to immediately get a job together with a partner or friend. On the larger yachts, however, there is often a large crew turnover, which means that a position quickly can become vacant. If one of you has already got a job, you can then recommend each other to increase your chances of working together. However, it is never a guarantee.

However, we can highly recommend taking the course together with a friend, and supporting eachtoher in the job search. Even if you do not get your first job together, it will be a memory for life!

The more experience in the industry you get, the easier it will be to apply for a job with a partner. Sometimes there are ads for "couple's position", in this case the yacht is specifically looking for a couple to employ. It is of course more difficult because you both have to match the positions the yacht are looking to fill, but it is common for couples to look for a jobsn together in the industry, althoug you will need more patience.

To participate in a course with us you dont need any previous experience.

In order to get a job on board a superyacht, it is as in any industry, previous work experience and knowledge is appreciated and can make it easier to get a first job. Previous experience in service and hotels can for example, be an advantage if you want to work as a stewardess, while a background such as carpenter or sailor is appreciated when you apply for the job as a deckhand. However, it is not necessary, but even without much previous experience, you can get a job on board.

For the entry-level positions personality, a positive attitude and self-drive are what are most appreciated on board, and are often more important than previous experience!

After completing a course with us, you need to complete a mandatory safety training called STCW10, as well as a food hygiene training, Food & Hygiene. If you want to work on deck, you do not need the food hygiene course, but you do need Powerboat Level 2. You also need a medical certification.

Yachting Sweden will help you book the right courses, and by booking through us you also get a discount. Cheaper and easier for you! Read more about these courses below.

STCW10 is a mandatory safety training that all people working on board ships need to complete. This is regardless of whether the ship is a superyacht or of another type. STCW10 involves training in first aid, sea rescue, fire, social responsibility, and safety awareness. Yachting Sweden will help you book this course, and when booking through us you will receive a discount on your STCW10 with either our partner in Stockholm, Safetygruppen,or our partner i France, Zephyr Yachting.

All persons who work with or in any way are in contact with food on board must have a basic education in food handling and hygiene. Food & Hygiene is mandatory to be able to get a job on board a superyacht as a stewardess. Yachting Sweden will help you book this course, and when booking through us you will receive a discount.

To be able to work as a deckhand on board a superyacht, you need to be able to drive tenderboats of smaller size. For two days you will learn to steer and navigate boats up to 13 meters. The course is 85% practical with some theory on the side. Yachting Sweden will help you book this course, and when booking through us you will receive a discount.

To attend the compulsory courses, and be able to apply for jobs on site in France, we recommend that you have a budget of approximately SEK 3000-3500 euro. This is so that you can take your courses, live and work in France for 2-3 weeks, and give your job search a real chance without having to worry too much about money. It may feel like a lot of money, but the wages onboard yachts are high, and you will soon have earned back what you spent. Applying for a job in France is also incredibly fun!

You need to be 18 years old to work on yachts. However, you can take Yachting Sweden's course from the age of 16, if this is something you feel you want to do after graduating, for example. The earlier you have information and knowledge about yachting, the faster you can set up a plan for how you want to do it!

Ofcourse you can! Its a good idea to complete our course some time in advance. In that way you are ready once you finish school!

During the spring 2019, when Covid19 hit the world, many yachts had to let go of some crew and assumed that the season would have to be canceled. During the summer of 2019, many boats still received charters and guest trips were booked, and suddenly the yachts had to re-employ, abd it was an advantage for the people looking for jobs, that were in Europe already. Many major events have been canceled during the year, and it has been difficult for many to get visas to the United States during the autumn and winter due to embassies closing down. But despite this, we have during the year had many participants who have landed jobs, and those who got a job have usually been quarantined in hotels for a week or so, and many yachts have had routines for regular Covid tests and of course other safety measures to ensure that the environment on board is as safe as possible for both guests and crew. Feel free to read the blog post blog here where we explain more how the industry has been affected by Covid19.

When it comes to our introductory courses, we ran our distance courses during the spring, and from July we started with our physical courses again. We are never more than 15 people, and have of course taken measures to make the environment as safe as possible during the course day. We still have our distance solution available for those who do not want to take the course physically. We also have more flexible cancellation rules, and if you have symptoms shortly before the course, you can change to another course opportunity free of charge.

Some yachts are very strict with tattoos, and have a non-tattoo policy. But there are also many yachts that do not have any problems with it. If you have discreet, small tattoos, this is usually completely OK. If you have large and very visible tattoos, you may be denied by some yachts! But like I said, some yachts have no problem with tattoos at all.

We usually say that when applying for your first job, it is smartest to apply for a job during during the swop of seasons, August - October, March-May. When you have your first experience, you can apply for a job all year round and also have good chances. Jobs are available all year round, but for your first experience, we recommend applying for it at during these times.
